Who’s your diva according to your Venus sign?

The term diva evokes a woman of opulence—an artist, primadonna, or business mogul whose self-centered interests are outmatched only by her confidence and talent. It’s no secret that “diva” is really just a dissimulating synonym for “bitch,” aimed at undercutting women unafraid to embrace star power. The sheer charisma and allure of a diva, like gravity, continues to draw us into orbit.
The Latin root for diva, literally, is “goddess,” not a rare word to find in a pop star’s Instagram comments alongside “mother” and “queen.” Stan culture and the popularization of the Black queer idiom have maxed celebrity worship to idolatry. Crossing the stans of a given diva can mean getting dogpiled and doxxed online, whether it’s Nicki Minaj’s fearsome Barbz or Lana del Rey’s deceptively flower-crowned admirers.
Could such devotion be written in the stars? Astrologers consider the planet Venus to understand love, relationships, and aesthetics. Someone with Venus in Scorpio, for example, may have a flair for the macabre or be attracted to the emotional intensity of musicians like Joni Mitchell and Frank Ocean, artists with a Scorpio Sun. This is called synastry, a technique in astrology that evaluates compatibility. In this example, the subject’s Scorpio Venus overlaps with the artist’s Scorpio Sun; aesthetic sensibility aligns with artistic expression.
Using this technique, this astrologer asks: Who’s your diva according to your Venus sign?
I’ve limited divadom to music superstars and offer two per sign to capture the dynamism of the zodiac. Get your horoscope, find your Venus sign, and discover which diva is for you.
Venus in Aries
While the original divas of the class— Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Diana Ross—are all Aries Suns, for the fiercest of the fire signs, I’ve chosen two divas whose breadth of work and indelible imprint on contemporary pop music and culture cannot be overstated: Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga.
Mimi embodies the pioneering spirit of Aries’ creativity as the first to bring hip-hop and rap into mainstream pop. Her skillset is unparalleled as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and hitmaker. She has nineteen Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits and will probably surpass The Beatles, claiming the number one spot, as competitive Aries loves to do.
Gaga claimed her spotlight the moment blood started dripping down her suspended body during her unforgettable 2009 VMA performance of “Paparazzi.” She is a conduit for the avant-garde and an inspiration for boundary-breakers across disciplines. That’s peak Aries. It’s the ram bucking ahead. It’s spring bursting forth.
Venus in Taurus
Look up a compilation video of every outfit reveal from The Cher Show, and you’ll easily see how Taurus is lushness, jewels, and decadence personified. Venus rules Taurus, and that means embracing the sensual pleasure that emerges from within. Cher commands both the stage and the runway with the cavalier attitude of someone who knows she is it, was it, and will continue to be it. She is effortless glamour that knows it will endure. Sure of herself since 1975, Cher has nothing to prove to anyone. Neither do the two honorable mentions, Grace Jones and Barbra Streisand.
Before SZA’s CTRL, there was Janet Jackson’s Control—just ask your parents whether they learned to dance imitating Jackson’s Control-era music videos. The “Pleasure Principle” singer has a knack for combining sweaty sex and sweet romance on her albums like “Throb” and “That’s the Way Love Goes” on Janet, or “Got Til It’s Gone” and “Rope Burn” on The Velvet Rope. Taurus isn’t all languor—it’s also the vigor of nature in bloom.
Venus in Gemini
When Kylie Minogue enters the stage of the 2002 BRIT Awards on a giant translucent disc to perform the “Blue Monday” rendition of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” the delight reverberating in the crowd’s cheers at this ridiculous yet ingenious spectacle reflects the charm of Gemini. Venus in Gemini is the heartpatter, the bloodrush to the face, the butterfly fluttering to every flower.
When Patti Labelle performs and is really feeing it, she often flutters her arms like wings. Her wing flaps are as quintessentially Patti as her legendary glissando. You think you know what “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” sounds like, but as soon as Labelle steps up to the mic and executes a vocal run as flashy as it is unexpected, you understand how mercurial and absolutely singular she is. And that makes her extra divalicious in a way that only a Gemini can achieve. Oh, did I mention she makes pies?
Venus in Cancer
The work of Solange and Ariana Grande typify the duality of Cancer, a water sign known for its ability to be vulnerable but protected. Cancer is attentive and dedicated but turbulent, pensive and active, not unlike the soft insides of a crab encased in its hard shell.
Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” acutely travels the vectors of emotional turmoil, and “Losing You” remains the classic break-up bop. Even her album names, A Seat at the Table, a soulful meditation on race and prejudice, followed by When I Get Home, a love letter to her hometown, Houston, speak to Cancer’s need to find a place of safety and belonging.
Similarly, Grande’s most recent release, Eternal Sunshine, explores finding her peace after a tumultuous divorce. Everywhere in her catalog, you can find themes of rediscovery and reinvention through her romantic relationships, but nowhere more than in the sharp, dance-pop rebuff: “thank u, next,” which lists her exes and how the relationships helped her grow and evolve as a person. For the most powerful lunar divas, power and comfort come from feeling at home in oneself.
Venus in Leo
Leo is the sign of star power. Venus in Leo is theatrical, visually striking, and unapologetic. No one personifies the waxes, wanes, and renewals of fame and stardom like Madonna. There is no conversation about pop culture without her, a feat she set into motion the moment she arrived in New York City, legend has it, with thirty-five dollars in her pocket. Her Celebration tour marked forty years of an audacious and unrelenting legacy.
The cover to Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits album is a sparkling David LaChappelle photograph of Whitney, beaming her million dollar smile, in a rhinestone top and crisp white capris, kicking her heel up. She’s drilling a platinum record into the wall of a room covered floor to ceiling in identical platinum records, like the shards of a disco ball. The “Queen of the Night” is a power-house of pure talent, whose stage presence, unshakeable confidence, and playfulness stem from knowing she is ‘The Voice.’ Leos are ‘That Diva.’
Venus in Virgo
Beyoncé is a gift from Virgo. The entire plot of the Renaissance film is how Beyoncé scrupulously executed the highest-grossing tour by a female artist. While Venus in Virgo tends to audit aesthetics or emotions, “that Beyoncé Virgo shit” shows us that a deep appreciation of craft and detail can lead to new heights of art-making. When freed from analysis paralysis, Virgo’s dedication to the harvest (the symbol of Virgo, the virgin, carries a sheaf of wheat) results in a precisely executed vision, like Beyoncé’s formidable sophomore solo album B’Day, which she wrote and recorded in an inspired two weeks.
A month after B’Day, Amy Winehouse released her Grammy Award-winning single “Rehab.” When her lifelong idol, Tony Bennett, announced her Grammy win, the brazen artist stood frozen, stunned as the shock, awe, and applause set in. Virgo is precise, and while that can often look labored, what aligns someone like Amy Winehouse with Venus in Virgo is authenticity. Her pin-up tattoos, Monroe piercing, and legendary beehive hairdo are as much a reflection of who she is as her songwriting and deep knowledge of jazz and R&B. What attracts Virgos to Amy and Beyoncé is their commitment to the craft of music and performance.
Venus in Libra
In traditional astrology, Venus rules Libra and Taurus. For Venusian subjects, like relationships, art, justice, women, femmes, and queer folks, there is a feeling of ease or emphasis when the planet moves through these signs. In Libra, Venus charms its way through the world, winning over naysayers with calculated plays.
Could anyone have predicted that the viral “Mooo!” singer would become the second-highest-selling female rapper worldwide? Doja Cat could, having navigated the music industry with finesse, force, and intelligence. Her absurdist online personality, trendsetting aesthetic, and constant stream of hits catapulted her albums Hot Pink, Planet Her, and Scarlet (very Libran names if you ask me) to diva fame. The styling for her next era, Vie, references Grace Jones (an honorable mention for Venus in Taurus). While the clearest meaning is the French word for “life”, I have a feeling Doja is also teasing the English use of vie, which means to compete.
Another Libra breakthrough is the Motomami herself, Rosalía. The twelve-time Latin Grammy and two-time Grammy award winner burst onto the scene with the genre-blending El Mal Querer. The Libra spark lies in its creative impulse; Librans experiment with proportions to create something new and innovative. Rosalía pushed her talent forward with 2022’s Motomami, whose ultra-fun and femme flair is the breath of fresh air we need from the next generation of pop divas.
Venus in Scorpio
In Scorpio, Venus is in dark mode. The intensity of this sign appears as brash as it does brooding—embodying the ‘IDGAF,’ take it or leave it energy shared by Aries placements.
Take SZA, for example. All over, SOS and CTRL are meditations on devotion, betrayal, and vengeance delivered with a level of intensity and honesty that veils autobiography and artistic license. Her music has a persistent vibe to it, reflecting Scorpio’s reputation for obsessiveness, and the Lana deluxe edition brings SOS to a whopping two hours and four minutes: whether falling in love or headlong in revenge, Scorpio is in it for the long haul.
No one’s mastered Scorpio’s allure quite like Björk. The triple Scorpio (Sun, Moon, and Rising) embodies the surreal and outlandish axis of the water sign. Her unorthodox ear alone sets her apart, but it’s her frequent surprise DJ sets that capture the freedom Venus in Scorpio can find when unafraid of forging their own path.
Venus in Sagittarius
Venus in the sign of the centaur is wild and playful, as bright as a lightning flash and commanding as the thunder that follows. Sagittarius is known for its adventurous, galvanizing energy that spreads its blazing optimism outward.
Through her relentless ambition and absolute faith in her talent, Nicki Minaj manifested her queen status. Prolific and smart, she single-handedly transformed conceptions of women in rap, conquering the mainstream. She carved her own lane and left a mark on the world while having a grand old time, playing with cadence, alter egos, and genres that range from pop and gospel to dancehall and reggaeton. Her infectious personality raised a generation of loyal Barbz and continues to inspire artists everywhere to have their “Moment 4 Life.”
If Nicki Minaj is the pinkprint, fellow Sagittarian Britney Spears is the pop
blueprint. Spears is the model for the twenty-first century pop star—creating iconic pop culture moments that are still referenced today, such as her 2001 Video Music Awards performance with a python
around her shoulders or, frankly, any of her music videos (“Toxic,” “Oops!…I Did it Again,” “…Baby One More Time,” “Lucky,” “Me Against the Music”…). Spears and Minaj share the X-factor that incites obsession.
It would be uncouth of me to leave this list without two progenitors of divahood who carried that Sagittarius wildfire: the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, and the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner.
Venus in Capricorn
Capricorn loves anything that lasts the test of time, and Sade is evergreen. The “Kiss of Life” singer can take as long as a ten-year hiatus between albums, but every time they come back—even for a single on a movie soundtrack—it’s global news. Sade herself personifies the Capricorn spirit of simple elegance. She found what works—a red lip, gold earrings, and hair slicked back into a single braid—and never looked back. Every context is appropriate for Sade. Date night? Play “Is it a Crime?” Cooking dinner? “Sweetest Taboo.” On hold with the telephone company? “Smooth Operator.” Her legacy is king—and that’s what Venus in Capricorn looks for.
Earth signs value skill and artistic prowess. With Venus in Capricorn, you may need to practice and hone a practical or embodied skill set. The Caprisongs singer FKA Twigs learns a new dance with each of her albums, like voguing with LP1 and pole with Magdalene. Twigs’ music career is characterized as much by movement, choreography, and style as it is by her experimental production and storytelling. Her latest project, Eusexua, is a practice. Twigs offers eleven “pillars” towards eusexua, “a state of pure presence, a moment of silent power, of nothingness.” Like its symbol, the goat, the Capricorn steers us towards a new potential.
Venus in Aquarius
“Megan Thee Stallion looks like she’s visiting from a planet inhabited by only hot tall women,” wrote one user on X—and no descriptor has felt more accurate since. The H-Town Hottie represents the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius, the water-bearer. Often mistaken for a water sign because of its symbol, Aquarius completes the air triplicity along with Gemini and Libra, and deals in social thought and structure with a bend towards collective sovereignty and innovation. Last February, Megan Thee Stallion signed a ground-breaking record deal with Warner Music Group in which she retained complete ownership of her masters and publishing while accessing the music company’s distribution and marketing support. The deal is a model for artists to empower themselves against the unfettered might of entertainment conglomerates. That’s diva power.
Shakira is another Aquarian industry first with a magnetic demeanor and a household name. The most successful Latin crossover artist began her career with a heavy rock influence, brandishing a guitar and harmonica. Her music evolved to include all sides of her identity—pop, reggaeton, Andean, Arabic, and electronic: “I’m always experimenting. So I try not to limit myself, or put myself in a category, or… be the architect of my own jail,” she said in a 2002 interview. Her 2024 album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran won her the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. When true to themselves, Aquarian excellence lasts decades.
Venus in Pisces
Venus is exalted in Pisces. The planet of pleasure and connection luxuriates in the sign of the vast ocean. Pisces represents the unification of parts into a whole and prioritizes expression, immersion, and spirituality.
Erykah Badu is a prime example of the Piscean artistic signature. She’s tapped into the zeitgeist on her wildly successful 1997 Live album. Hearing “Tyrone” unfold in front of an audience for the first time is a treat. Badu’s entire career has unfolded to reflect an interest in the world’s spiritual well-being—beginning with herself. The 2025 Billboard Women in Music Icon Award winner makes legible what is deep beneath the surface.
Rihanna doesn’t waver in her vision. She knew how to create her own wave. In music, beauty, and fashion, her presence floods the world. For Venus in Pisces, Rihanna is an intensity—generous, present, and emotional. Her music articulates her passions and provides an outlet for the romantic to express its pent-up heat. Luxuriating in sweetness is one end of the Venus in Pisces spectrum. The other is indulging in the wild love—of self and others—that, like a siren, Rihanna sings of.
